How to play Connect 4

Drop discs into the grid and be the first to line up four of your colour — across, down or diagonally.

1. Choose your AI difficulty tier — start easy and move up as you win.
2. Tap a column to drop your disc; it falls to the lowest empty cell in that column.
3. Take turns with the AI, aiming to connect four of your discs in a row, column or diagonal.
4. Block the AI whenever it has three in a row with a playable fourth cell.
5. Build positions with two winning threats at once — a double threat can’t be blocked.
6. Connect four first to win the game; a full board with no line is a draw.

Connect 4 tips & strategy

• Take the centre column early — it participates in more possible four-in-a-rows than any other column and is the strongest first move in the game.
• Never answer a threat late: if your opponent has three with an open fourth cell, blocking is mandatory before anything else.
• Play for double threats (a “seven” shape or two open threes) — one block can’t stop two winning squares.
• Mind the odd/even rows: as the first player, aim your key threats at odd rows (1, 3, 5 from the bottom); as second player, favour even rows.
• Before dropping, check the cell directly above your move — filling a column can gift the opponent the very square they needed.
• Diagonal threats are the easiest to miss (for you and the AI) — scan both diagonals every single turn.
