How to play Minesweeper

Use the number clues to uncover safe tiles and flag the hidden mines without setting one off.

1. Tap any tile to start — the first reveal is safe and usually opens a region of the board.
2. Read the numbers: each one tells you how many mines touch that tile among its (up to eight) neighbours.
3. Long-press a tile to plant a flag where you’ve deduced a mine must be.
4. Cross-reference overlapping number clues to prove which covered tiles are safe, then tap them.
5. Never guess while a logical deduction exists somewhere on the board.
6. Reveal every safe tile — without touching a single mine — to win.

Minesweeper tips & strategy

• Open with corners or edges — border tiles have fewer neighbours, so their numbers constrain the board more tightly.
• Learn the 1-2-1 pattern along a wall: the mines sit under the 1s, and the tile facing the 2 is safe.
• Its sibling, 1-2-2-1, is just as common: the mines are under the two 2s, and both outer tiles are safe.
• A number already touching that many flags has paid its dues — every other tile around it is safe to open.
• Subtract overlapping clues: if a 1 and a 2 share two unknown tiles and the 1’s mine must be in that pair, the 2’s remaining neighbour is a guaranteed mine.
• When you truly must guess, choose the tile with the fewest adjacent constraints — and prefer opening a fresh area over the middle of a tangle.
