How to play Klondike Solitaire

Build the four suit piles up from Ace to King by sorting cards into descending, alternating-colour runs.

1. Study the deal: seven tableau columns with only the top card face up, plus a stock pile to draw from.
2. Move cards between columns in descending order and alternating colours (a red 6 goes on a black 7).
3. Turn face-down cards face up by clearing the cards on top of them.
4. Send Aces to the foundations as soon as they appear, then build each suit upward — Ace, 2, 3… to King.
5. Draw from the stock when you run out of moves on the table.
6. Move a King (and its run) into any empty column, and win by completing all four foundations.

Klondike Solitaire tips & strategy

• Always flip a face-down card when you can — uncovering hidden cards is worth more than almost any other move.
• Empty columns are precious: fill them only with Kings, and prefer the King colour that helps your buried cards.
• Dig into the longest face-down piles first; the short columns will unblock themselves along the way.
• Don’t rush cards to the foundations — a 2 or 3 kept on the table can catch cards you’ll need to move later.
• Before drawing from the stock, scan the whole tableau; a missed move on the table can waste a full pass of the deck.
• When two moves are possible, pick the one that frees a face-down card rather than the one that merely looks tidy.
