How to play Spider Solitaire

Arrange cards into descending suit runs to clear them, and empty the whole tableau to win.

1. Move cards between the ten columns in descending order — any suit is legal for a single card.
2. Remember that only runs of the same suit move together as a group, so build in-suit whenever possible.
3. Uncover face-down cards by moving the cards stacked on top of them.
4. Use empty columns as workspace to re-sort mixed-suit stacks into single-suit runs.
5. When no moves remain, deal a new row from the stock — every column must have at least one card first.
6. Complete a full King-to-Ace run in one suit and it flies off the board; clear all eight runs to win.

Spider Solitaire tips & strategy

• Build in-suit whenever you have the choice — off-suit stacking is sometimes necessary, but it creates stacks you can’t move as a unit.
• Empty a column as early as you can and guard it; a free column is the engine that lets you untangle everything else.
• Turn over face-down cards at every opportunity — hidden cards are the real obstacle, not the visible mess.
• Before dealing a new row from the stock, squeeze out every possible move; the new row buries all ten columns at once.
• Prefer moves that keep your options open: placing a card off-suit is fine if it exposes a face-down card or frees a column.
• Break up big off-suit stacks early, while empty columns are available — the longer you wait, the more space it takes.
